From what he could remember from his history classes vestal virgins were priestesses of Vesta, goddess of the hearth.

The college of the Vestals was regarded as fundamental to the continuance and security of Rome. 

These individuals cultivated the sacred fire that was not allowed to go out.

He also known that vestal virgins did not have an easy life.

If a vestal virgin failed in her duties, she was severely beaten.

If a vestal virgin lost her virginity she would be buried alive. 

Which meant he was not going to have an easy time living in the past were sex orgies were just an everyday thing.
