Matthew thought his wife was overreacting & taking things too seriously.

All he had said when she asked him to help with the housework was that was Woman's Work.

Which of course he regretted saying now.

Especially when he discovered his wife was a closet witch who had the ability to make him regret what he said by turning him into obedient housewife who was only happy when she was cleaning.
