The first three years in space was nothing exciting mining asteroids for minerals and precious metals until an accident occurred and his space suit was ruptured.
The automatic self sealing system quickly stopped the leak before he lost too much oxygen but not before some of the minerals from the asteroid entered his space suit.
He had no idea that he had been affected by an alien substance until 6 hours after the incident and his body slowly started to transform into a female version of itself which came as a massive shock.
He contacted control & they put him under quarantine and left him floating in space waiting for a medical specialist team to come and rescue him.
Which gave him plenty of time to come to terms with what had happened to him.
