He in fact believe that he was supposed to be Sophie Turner .
His anger and rage that somebody else had gotten the life that was meant for him was so intense he started to hate Sophie.
Every night he would sit in his bed smoking pot and pledging his soul to anybody who was listening if they would just give him the life that was meant for him he would give them his immortal soul.
Unbeknownst to him somebody was listening and made his desires reality & Josef found himself in Sophie's body the next day with the belief that he had always been her and Josef and his crazy life was just a dream.
He would only find out the truth when the devil came to claim his pledge.
But he had a good 60 happy years before that was due.
