False hope.
Tom or rather Thomasina sat on a park bench during recess between classes reading the book he found in what was now his bedroom hidden behind what was now his Barbie doll collection.
The book seem to explain the practice of dark magic and curses but most of it was written in some language he could not really understand.
So he brought the book to school with him hoping that he might find something in the school library that could help him but this was not Hogwarts and there was nothing in there that could help.
So until he could find some way of translating this book and finding out why he was suddenly a 14 year old school girl with a mother that he recognised and a stepfather he felt he knew.
Unaware that his stepfather was in fact his brother and his mother was his wife and the book that he held in his hands contain nothing but gibberish and was left in his room just to give him a sense of false hope.
Whilst the real magic book was safely locked away and the only person who knew how to use it was his wife who had done this just to get him out of the way so she could have his brother without losing anything in a messy divorce.
But that's not to say it was not difficult changing the whole world to believe that he had died in an automobile accident and that they always had a young daughter but his wife thought losing 5 years of her life was a worthwhile sacrifice just to get rid of him and have the child she had always wanted that he had always denied her.
